Maddy is Dr Staples 5 year old Australian Labradoodle. She is hypoallergenic and non-shedding. She is an empathy dog in training and will stand or sit beside anxious patients during local analgesic injections. She loves the attention and will help distract and soothe your injection fears away. She can be seen when you come in for your Hygiene Recalls to greet you and make sure you are comfortable. Feel free to ask for her anytime. She is happy to oblige. Most other times you will find her curled up on her bed with her favorite orange ball.

Dr. Rachel Staples DMD

Rachel was born and raised in Victoria and was thrilled to return to her hometown in 1995 – after completing her dental degree at the University of British Columbia – to start her practice and raise her family.

A life-long learner, Rachel embarked on a journey of further training and hands-on learning in 2007. She attended and completed all seven core levels of neuromuscular dentistry at the prestigious LVI Global in Las Vegas, Nevada where she is currently a fellow. Rachel believes in integrating comprehensive diagnosis and contemporary techniques with the latest technologies. With this philosophy, her goal is to improve the lives of her patients and to bring beautiful smiles to all who visit her office.

While raising three young boys with her husband Brock, Rachel built her business to four practices over 15 years. As many of us do, she has realized that quality is far better than quantity so she has worked over the past year to streamline and simplify her life both personally and professionally. Urban Smiles Victoria is the culmination of that effort: quality dentistry in a caring environment, delivered by a team whose mission it is to make your dental visit a thoroughly enjoyable experience.

Over the years, Rachel has performed countless hours of volunteer work through Dentistry for the Heart and, along with her team, has delivered hundreds of thousands of dollars in dental care to those in need in her own community. She has also enjoyed volunteering with the Rotary Club, delivering dental services and supplies to the indigenous people of Guatemala. In the next few years, she hopes to recruit her sons and husband to join her on a dental mission to South East Asia.

Dr. Brett Livingstone DMD

Originally from the lower mainland, Brett is excited to begin a new journey on Vancouver Island. Brett attended the University of British Columbia to complete his dental degree, where he received multiple awards, including the College of Dental Surgeons of British Columbia Scholarship which is awarded to the student who obtained the top academic record in their class. After working in the lower mainland, he was drawn to Victoria by the adventure and outdoor lifestyle Vancouver Island has to offer.

Patient education is the cornerstone of his practice philosophy. Brett puts great emphasis on taking the time to answer your questions and ensure you feel comfortable and well informed before making any decisions regarding treatment. In order to provide the best treatment possible, Brett stays up to date on the latest research through study clubs and continuing education courses.

Being an active part of the community is important to Brett. He has previously served as a director on youth soccer boards, volunteered with a crisis service center, and while in dental school, provided free emergency dental care to the underserved community.

When not working, Brett can be found on the soccer field, kiteboarding on windy days, trying out new recipes, and spending time with his loving wife Jessica.

Dr. Sunny Makkar DMD

A native of Abbotsford, BC, Sunny has always had an appreciation for the value of immersion in one’s community, big or small. He’s excited to continue to enjoy BC life in Victoria.

After completing his B.Sc in Biology at the University of the Fraser Valley, Sunny went on to pursue Dentistry at UBC, where he became involved in volunteer initiatives at his local community outreach clinic.

Sunny understands that there is no single universal approach to caring for a diverse set of patients, each with unique needs and desires for their oral health. He believes in working with his patients to determine these needs, and knows that improving oral health is foundational to the enjoyment and enrichment of your life.

Outside of the office, Sunny is an avid motorcyclist, average skier, and appallingly bad golfer.

Dr. Dan Goldberg DMD

Before embarking on a journey into the world of dentistry, Dr. Dan Goldberg graduated from the University of Calgary with a Bed, and a BSc. Four years later he graduated from the University of Pittsburgh with his Dental degree. With over 18 years’ experience in the dental field he has a diverse background in all aspects Dentistry, but has a keen interest in oral surgery. He has travelled to Mexico, and Guatemala to provide oral surgery to people who are in pain and unable to access dental surgery. Dr. Goldberg also enjoys helping to teach other fellow dentists on surgical techniques to help them feel more confident and successful when they are performing oral surgery. In 2009 Dr. Goldberg had the opportunity to work as an instructor at the University of Alberta in the Radiology department, while also conducting stem cell research on growing teeth. Outside of Dentistry there is nothing Dr. Goldberg enjoys more than spending time with his family and going on adventures with them. He is also an avid nature photographer, yoga instructor, gardener, and kayaker.

Originally from Saskatchewan, Brooke moved to Victoria in 2016 to further pursue her dental career. Prior to joining Urban Smiles, she was a dental Office Manager back home in North Battleford. Brooke has always had a true passion for all things dental.

As the Practice Manager for Urban Smiles Victoria, her main job is to oversee the office operations. She is dedicated to providing an exceptional experience for patients and creating a fun-loving and healthy atmosphere for the team. Brooke truly loves her job!

Outside of the practice Brooke enjoys spending her time with her friends, family, and her Pomeranian, Bear. If you can’t find her camping or laying on a beach, you will find her enjoying a quiet evening in watching Netflix.

Danielle

Danielle graduated from the Dental Hygiene Diploma Program at Camosun College in 2015. In the past 5 years she has been building her skills as a clinical hygienist and prides herself on being thorough and providing individualized care. Danielle is committed to furthering her education, so in addition to working full-time, she is completing her Bachelor's degree in Dental Hygiene. She then plans to complete a Master's degree.

Danielle is passionate about the oral-systemic link and strives to work with her patients to improve their oral and overall health. 

Danielle grew up in the Comox Valley where she married her high school sweetheart. They just recently moved to Victoria and are excited about exploring all it has to offer.

Sarah

Sarah moved to Victoria from Cranbrook, BC in 2011 and couldn’t be happier on the island! She recently graduated from the Dental Hygiene program at Camosun College and is currently pursuing further education to obtain her baccalaureate degree at UBC. Sarah is excited to build new relationships with patients at Urban Smiles. In her spare time, Sarah loves to travel and spend time with friends and family. She enjoys being outdoors as much as possible, doing things like hiking, biking, and running.

Shannon

Shannon received his BDS degree from KLE university, India and moved to Victoria in 2015 to
pursue his further education. He completed his Dental hygiene diploma at Camosun College
and has been working as a hygienist since July,2018. He is also preparing for his dental licensing
exams in Canada. He strongly believes that prevention is better that cure and his priority is to
always provide the best patient centered care.

Shannon had an instant connection with the island! He enjoys the outdoors, often going for
hikes and camping over the weekends. He is also passionate about football and likes playing the
guitar and reading in his spare time.

Dana is one of our fantastic Registered Dental Hygienists. Her gentle hands and calm voice will sooth even the most anxious dental patient.
Dentistry is in Dana’s blood! Her parents practice in the Okanagan, her mom as a dental hygienist and her dad as a dentist. She was born and raised in Kelowna and moved to Vancouver in 2016. She graduated from Vancouver College of Dental Hygiene in 2018 and moved to Victoria to pursue her love of outdoor activities. Dana takes great pride in helping her patients feel comfortable and at ease in the dental office.
When not in the office you can find her hiking or exploring the city with her doodle Ryleigh, or relaxing with a good book at a local coffee shop

Ashley graduated from Camosun College’s Dental Hygiene program in 2020, and her steady hands and precision-focused attitude proved that she was a perfect addition to the Urban Smiles team. Her favorite part of being a Dental Hygienist is helping people better their overall health. She loves meeting new people and working at Urban Smiles lets her meet all sorts of new people on a daily basis!
Ashley is a born and raised Victoria-ite and is more than happy to share all her favourite haunts of the city, be it a quiet coffee shop or an off the grid camping spot. In her spare time, Ashley likes to explore all of the hidden nooks and crannies the Island has to offer. When she’s not exploring, she likes to curl up with her retired service dog, Nala, and read a good book. Make sure to ask her what she’s currently reading!

Krista

Originally from St. Catharines Ontario, Krista moved to Nanaimo BC where she found her passion for dentistry. She attended Vancouver Island University and graduated the Certified Dental Assistant program in 2014. She started working right away at Island Oral Facial and Implant Surgery where she began her CDA journey. Now she is back in family dentistry looking to be a helping hand in the dental community. Krista has a passion for learning new skills and providing outstanding patient care and developing great relationships with each patient. Doing her best at helping each patient smile again.

Outside of the practice, Krista has been a Certified Zumba Fitness Instructor and Zumba Strong Instructor since 2012. When she isn’t jamming out to Latin music, you can find her exploring our beautiful Island. From backpacking the Juan de Fuca trails to Surfing in Tofino, Krista is now happily living the West Coast Best Coast lifestyle.

Certified Dental Assistant

Colleen is our in-house Invisalign expert! She will be the dental assistant helping the doctors with your Invisalign case and will be the perfect person to provide you with all the necessary tips and tricks to make your Invisalign journey seamless. Her entry into dental was a little unconventional: she was a third-year apprentice in the Pastry chef program at Vancouver Island University when she decided that baker’s hours were not her thing and opted for a program with more reasonable working hours. She has been a CDA since 2016 after graduating from Camosun College’s Dental Assisting program. In 2018 she upgraded her skill set by taking the orthodontic module at Okanagan College.

When not in the office, you can often find Colleen in a kitchen making sweet treats for her friends and family, camping on Saltspring Island, or hiking backwoods trails in Cowichan with her puppers Kota and Oggy.

Sarah is a member of our amazing Dental Assistant team, plus she is also one of our TikTok directors and videographers (@urbansmiles). Born and raised in the Cowichan Valley, she stayed local for her CDA program, attending Vancouver Island University in Nanaimo. Her favourite part of working at Urban Smiles is all the interactions she gets to have on a daily basis with new and fascinating people.

Outside the office Sarah’s favourite activity is to travel. She’s been bitten hard by the travel bug, and has visited Mexico, Puerto Rico, California, Florida, Las Vegas, and Sint Maarten/Saint Martin, to name a few. She even spent 2 weeks volunteering in Vicente Guerrero, Mexico, building a school in a small community. Future travel plans include visiting Italy and other Mediterranean countries. She loves to share her travel experiences and stories and is always looking for recommended places to visit.

Bethany

Financial Coordinator

Bethany recently graduated from Camosun College with a Bachelor’s degree in Kinesiology. She studied topics including nutrition, exercise physiology, disease pathophysiology and exercise prescription. While in school she had the opportunity to fulfill her passion for helping people and spent 2 years volunteering at a local fitness center for different abilities, helping a variety of people living with conditions such as spinal cord injuries and degenerative diseases, to name a few.

As perhaps one of the loudest people in the office, you will definitely hear Bethany’s cheerful voice at the front reception area! Bethany has years’ worth of administrative and customer service experience, most recently working in the retail sector. If she looks familiar to you, she has probably sold you something! Bethany is the perfect person to share orthodontic stories with, as her love for dentistry came after her own extended and complicated orthodontic past. When not at work you can find her out hunting Pokémon or binging The Office for the 17,000th time on Netflix.

Marcey

Restorative Coordinator

Marcey is our World Traveler! She moved to Victoria in 2010 and has called many places ‘home’. She has lived in New Zealand, Australia, the Okanagan, and mainland Vancouver. She has travelled to Fiji, the Bahamas, Tahiti, Cuba, Hawaii and has plans to visit Costa Rica and Thailand.
Her dental experience is vast. She graduated from her CDA program in 2016 and started her dental journey as a Certified Dental Assistant in a general practice. From there she moved to an Orthodontist office, then reception in a Periodontal office, and finally landed here at Urban Smiles where she is our ‘Jane of All Trades’ working primarily as our Restorative Coordinator.
Marcey loves having the ability to help people get out of pain and takes great joy in helping people find their perfect smile. When not working in the office, you can find Marcey in the woods camping, 4x4ing, or hiking with her dogs, Charlie, and Jake. And for all our Samoan patients, Marcey would like to say, “Talofa lava”.

Nicole

Hygiene Coordinator

Nicole is born and bred on Vancouver Island! She grew up in the community of Saltair, outside of Chemainus. She moved to Lethbridge Alberta in 2012 to attend the College of Lethbridge, graduating from their Central Sterile Processing program in 2013. Outside of her job at Urban Smiles Nicole also works a few days a month as a Sterile Tech at Victoria General Hospital.
As our Hygiene Coordinator, Nicole will be the person you speak with to schedule your next hygiene appointment, working with you to help find the best possible appointment time to fit your busy lifestyle. Nicole loves working in dental because of the variety of people she gets to interact with on a daily basis, meeting people from all walks of life that she may not otherwise have the opportunity to get to know.
When not at work Nicole can be found outdoors exploring and hiking the Island or snuggled up in front of her fireplace with her cat, Jellybean.

Marina wears a few hats around Urban Smiles: she is another of our fantastic Sterile Bay Assistants, and she also acts as our Social Media Coordinator. When she’s not bustling around the office helping our clinicians keep their instruments sterile and operatories well-stocked, you’ll find her snapping pictures for our Instagram page (@UrbanSmilesVictoria) or filming hilarious TikTok videos (@urbansmiles).
Outside of the practice you can find Marina enjoying adventure sports such as scuba diving and cliff jumping, or hiking and camping with her BFF Maddy, and her dog Russell. Marina spent 12 years as a competitive gymnast, and now coaches the younger generation of athletes at Inspire Sports. Marina’s future includes plans to pursue a career in Veterinary science.

Sterilization Assistant

Madeline is one of our fantastic Sterile Bay Assistants. She is an integral part of the office, ensuring that our dental instruments are cleaned and sterilized after every appointment. You will also find her around the office sanitizing commonly accessed surfaces or restocking supplies in the operatories.
Maddy is BFFs with our Sterile Bay Assistant/Social Media Coordinator, Marina. As BFF’s, they make a stellar team. Feeling the chemistry between them when they applied for the position, we knew they needed to be hired together!
In 2016 Maddy and her family worked with the MexPup dog rescue organization to bring home Nico, a terrier cross found on the streets of Puerto Vallarta. When not in the office, you will find Maddy camping and exploring with Nico or socializing and shopping with her friends. She also plays Center Field in a local Woman’s Field Hockey organization.
