Maddy is Dr Staples 5 year old Australian Labradoodle. She is hypoallergenic and non-shedding. She is an empathy dog in training and will stand or sit beside anxious patients during local analgesic injections. She loves the attention and will help distract and soothe your injection fears away. She can be seen when you come in for your Hygiene Recalls to greet you and make sure you are comfortable. Feel free to ask for her anytime. She is happy to oblige. Most other times you will find her curled up on her bed with her favorite orange ball.

Dr. Rachel Staples DMD

Rachel was born and raised in Victoria and was thrilled to return to her hometown in 1995 – after completing her dental degree at the University of British Columbia – to start her practice and raise her family.

A life-long learner, Rachel embarked on a journey of further training and hands-on learning in 2007. She attended and completed all seven core levels of neuromuscular dentistry at the prestigious LVI Global in Las Vegas, Nevada where she is currently a fellow. Rachel believes in integrating comprehensive diagnosis and contemporary techniques with the latest technologies. With this philosophy, her goal is to improve the lives of her patients and to bring beautiful smiles to all who visit her office.

While raising three young boys with her husband Brock, Rachel built her business to four practices over 15 years. As many of us do, she has realized that quality is far better than quantity so she has worked over the past year to streamline and simplify her life both personally and professionally. Urban Smiles Victoria is the culmination of that effort: quality dentistry in a caring environment, delivered by a team whose mission it is to make your dental visit a thoroughly enjoyable experience.

Over the years, Rachel has performed countless hours of volunteer work through Dentistry for the Heart and, along with her team, has delivered hundreds of thousands of dollars in dental care to those in need in her own community. She has also enjoyed volunteering with the Rotary Club, delivering dental services and supplies to the indigenous people of Guatemala. In the next few years, she hopes to recruit her sons and husband to join her on a dental mission to South East Asia.

Dr Mike Nesbitt B.D.S.

Michael moved to Victoria from his hometown in Cranbrook B.C. His hobbies involve many outdoor activities including hiking, camping, hunting, fishing, snowboarding running and swimming. Dentistry runs in Michael’s family as his father has been in practice for 41 years back in Cranbrook.

Michael received his BDS Honours degree at University College Cork (UCC) in Cork Ireland where he has made lifelong friends there who he often keeps in contact with. During his time overseas, he enjoyed five years of challenging school as well as experiencing the best of Cork, the country Ireland, and many other places around Europe.

Michael has decided to pursue his dental career out here in Victoria and is very excited to be working on the island and a contributor to the local community.      

Dr Darryl Sinclair D.D.S.

Darryl is happy to be able to contribute his experience and expertise from over 30 years as a general dentist to Dr. Staple’s practice. Upon graduation from dentistry at the University of Alberta, Darryl immediately moved to Victoria. He and his wife, Arla, have been here ever since while raising their three children, now all adults with their own families. Darryl operated his own dental clinic in Victoria until passing it on to a younger colleague in 2015. Darryl is now happily straddling the working world and that of retirement, maintaining his professional skills and responsibilities while enjoying more free time.

Maintaining a high level of clinical excellence has been foremost throughout Darryl’s career. He is highly trained in occlusion (bite) and all facets of restorative dentistry. His practice philosophy and treatment modalities are completely in line with Dr. Staple’s.

Membership in organized dentistry has been important throughout his practice life. Darryl is an Honorary Member of the Victoria and District Dental Society, having maintained his membership in since commencing practice in Victoria and has served on the VDDS board and as President Elect and President. He has also been a board member of the British Columbia Dental Association, serving for several years in that position.

When he is not at work, Darryl can be found doing something physical; jogging, biking, cross training, skiing or hiking. And if you can’t locate him doing one of these, you will find him in his wood work shop or travelling with Arla.

Dr Leah Hall B.D.S.

Leah is a third-generation dentist. Her passion for dentistry was ignited by watching both
her father and grandfather at work with their dental patients. It was an ambition of hers
since she was young to become a dentist, she loves what she does and remains as
passionate to this day about maintaining her patient’s oral health.

Although Leah is originally from Victoria, she chose to study at James Cook University
in Cairns, Australia because of the reputable hands on experience that they offer their
students. At the end of her studies Leah travelled within Australia to Tasmania and the
Outback of Central Queensland to work with disadvantaged communities. During this
time, she also traveled to small communities in mobile dental vans to assist those
without access to essential services. Leah continues to take courses regularly in order
to stay up to date with all aspects of dentistry and is a member of the Victoria and
District Dental Society and the British Columbia Dental Society.

Outside of dentistry Leah enjoys being creative through photography, painting and
knitting. She is an outdoor enthusiast enjoying activities such as hiking, skiing, paddle
boarding and kayaking.

Leah strives to give each patient who travels through her office the best experience that
she can and to give them the knowledge they need to take excellent care of their teeth
at home. She encourages her patients to ask questions, whether that be about a
particular treatment option or oral health in general!

Cathy

Office Manager

Cathy has recently returned to Victoria after spending 15 years in the Comox Valley and 10 years in North Vancouver. Cathy attended Camosun College Certified Dental Assisting program and has spent many years in Dental Reception and Office Management. With a strong background in Practice Management and business ownership, Cathy is excited to join the team at Urban Smiles. She has a passion for excellence in clinical dentistry, optimum patient care and customer service. Cathy enjoys the golf, cycling and the island lifestyle along with her husband Rory.

Shannon

Registered Dental Hygienist

Shannon has 24 years’ experience working in a dental environment, 18 years of those as a registered dental hygienist and 6 years as a dental assistant prior to that. She has worked as a hygiene educator and written curriculum for dental hygiene programs in Ontario, mentored new dental hygienists in clinical practice and given back to her community by participating in free dental hygiene clinics and travelling abroad to provide hygiene services to orphans in Mexico. She is compassionate by nature and cares deeply about providing safe and client-centered care.

As a lifelong learner, Shannon strives for continued professional growth. After graduating from the Dental Hygiene Program at Confederation College in Thunder Bay, ON, she completed her local anaesthetic training at the University of Manitoba and then the Adult Teaching Training Module through Brock University. Most recently, she completed her Bachelor of Science in Dental Hygiene through Northern Arizona University.

Originally from Ontario, she moved to Victoria with her partner Sebastien and two step-children in 2016. She enjoys travelling, a good conversation and spending time with her family.

Jillian

Registered Dental Hygienist

Originally from Northern Alberta, Jillian moved to Vancouver in 2010 to complete her dental
assisting certificate. Upon completion, she moved to Victoria to further her education in the
dental field and completed her dental hygiene diploma at Camosun College. Jillian has a knack
for making patient’s feel at ease and wants your experience here at Urban Smiles to be the very
best! When she is not at work, Jillian can be found playing ice hockey or hanging out with her
two rescue cats.

Shannon

Registered Dental Hygienist

Shannon received his BDS degree from KLE university, India and moved to Victoria in 2015 to
pursue his further education. He completed his Dental hygiene diploma at Camosun College
and has been working as a hygienist since July,2018. He is also preparing for his dental licensing
exams in Canada. He strongly believes that prevention is better that cure and his priority is to
always provide the best patient centered care.

Shannon had an instant connection with the island! He enjoys the outdoors, often going for
hikes and camping over the weekends. He is also passionate about football and likes playing the
guitar and reading in his spare time.

Sarah

Sarah moved to Victoria from Cranbrook, BC in 2011 and couldn’t be happier on the island! She recently graduated from the Dental Hygiene program at Camosun College and is currently pursuing further education to obtain her baccalaureate degree at UBC. Sarah is excited to build new relationships with patients at Urban Smiles. In her spare time, Sarah loves to travel and spend time with friends and family. She enjoys being outdoors as much as possible, doing things like hiking, biking, and running.

Alejandra

Certified Dental Assistant

Born in Bogota Colombia, Ale moved to Victoria in 1996 and was accepted into the CDA program at Camosun College in 1999. She completed the program in the summer of 2000 and started with Dr. Staples (at a previous practice) as a practicum student. She was hired shortly thereafter. She feels very lucky to have landed in an office where the dentists are constantly learning and growing and encouraging the staff to do the same. Ale has Invisalign, neuromuscular, and cosmetic training. She is also a certified dental anesthesia/sedation CDA. Ale has a love for languages and speaks Spanish, English and Italian. She enjoys traveling, the outdoors and salsa dancing.

Amanda

Social Media Coordinator

Amanda, originally from the Okanagan, moved to Victoria in 2014 to attend the Certified Dental
Assisting program at Camosun College. She landed her first job at Urban Smiles where she
worked as a Dental Assistant and in Reception as an Administrator. She was not ready to leave
the fantastic team at USV, so while she is continuing her education by pursuing a career in
Dental Hygiene, she is staying on the team as the Social Media Coordinator.

Monica

Certified Dental Assistant

Who would have thought that asking for a toothbrush, after having a surgery in 1997, would lead Monica in the dentistry direction, switching from a Bachelor of Education degree. Originally born and raised in the East Kootenays, Monica moved to Victoria in 1999 to attend the Certified Dental Assistant course at Camosun College and never left. Recently, Monica left her dental administration position to focus on the continued care of our patients, working alongside our amazing practitioners.

A self-proclaimed nerd, Monica spends her days looking down to the ground, finding treasures amongst the earth. As an alumni of the Gemological Institute of America, Monica attends conventions discussing rocks, gems and minerals. Her most recent aquisition is an enhydrate agate, which is a rock with water trapped inside! Ask her to show you when you come in for your appointment

In her spare time, Monica can be found volunteering to many different events in Victoria, Vancouver and upper Island. She is fond of concerts, travel, Hello Kitty and all things food.

Megan

Certified Dental Assistant/Administrator

Megan has been a Certified Dental Assistant since graduating with excellence from Discovery Community College in 2008; she has been working with Dr. Staples for over six years. Passionate about her work, she strives to continuously add to her skill set and provide quality care to all her patients. She has advanced training in Neuromuscular Dentistry, Dental Record-keeping, Dynamic Team Concepts, and is a Certified Zoom Whitening Provider. Megan loves educating her patients about dentistry and helping them to feel at ease in the dental chair.

Brooke

Treatment Coordinator

Originally from Saskatchewan, Brooke moved to Victoria in 2016 for a taste of the West Coast lifestyle. Prior to joining Urban Smiles, Brooke was a Dental Assistant and Office Administrator back home in North Battleford. Brooke has always had a true passion for all things dental. She loves spending her day seeing new patients and forming lasting relationships with them.

As a treatment coordinator, her main job is to educate the patients about their treatment options. Some duties include preparing patients for their appointments, discussing recommended treatment and reviewing financial options. Brooke’s main goal with every patient is to help them become comfortable with the thought of treatment. At times, you may find her at the front desk filling in when needed.

Outside of the practice Brooke likes to spend most of her time with her friends, family, and her Pomeranian. If you can’t find her camping or laying on a beach, you will find her enjoying an evening in watching whatever’s new on Netflix.

Kyra

Office Administrator

Originally from Edmonton, Kyra graduated from Princess Margaret Secondary in Vancouver, after which she attended VIU in Nanaimo. After completing her Bachelor of Science degree, Kyra found her passion for dentistry, to which she completed her Dental Assisting program in 2012.

Kyra spent the majority of her dental career as an assistant in Nanaimo and Qualicum Beach. New to Victoria, Kyra started here as an Office Administrator in 2018. Now, she oversees the day to day functions of our business as well as providing information for daily treatment recommendations. She keeps the office atmosphere light and fun and works closely with staff and patients to provide the ultimate care.

In her free time, Kyra loves spending time outdoors, hiking, and laying on the beach. Her favorite thing to do is spend time with her beautiful Bichon Havanese, Dennie.

Ashly

Ashly is our newest member to join Urban Smiles and is also new to the Dentistry. She made the transition from Certified Dental Assistant to Dental Administrator in 2018. She has done an amazing job of learning our systems in the short time she has been here.

As the person that greets you with a smile upon your arrival, Ashly is enjoying getting to know each one of you at your next visit.  Her warm and soothing voice will make you feel at ease!

Ashly has a love for the outdoors and can be found playing basketball or walking her dog Sophie, who is also a huge Lakers fan!
